BIRDS OF A FEATHER BOM BLOCK #4

BIRDS OF A FEATHER BOM BLOCK #4

BIRDS OF A FEATHER BOM - BLOCK #4

February 01, 2021 by Grace Lombardo

Hello Everyone! It’s time for block #4 of the BOM. This super simple block is our spring/Easter design.

For those of you just joining in, the supply list and general instructions can be found in the November Block #1 post.

There’s very little embroidery in this block, so it’s one of the easiest of the nine blocks. Because of the simplicity of the design, fabric choice plays a key role. I used a plaid cut on point for my bunny. My friend Nancy (and fellow Wooly Gal), who used a raw edge applique technique, chose a beautiful large scale print for her bunny.

Of course, some of you may want to have a solid bunny that be embroidered with a decorative motif. Whatever you choose, this is your time to put your own spin on the design.

Let’s begin.

Wool requirements - Suggested colors

  • Bird body - 4 1/2” x 5” blue

  • Bird wing - 2” x 3” light blue plaid

  • Bunny - 6 1/2” square pink plaid cut on point

  • Bunny ears - 1 1/2” x 2” pink

  • Flower - 2” square yellow

  • Flower leaves - 2” x 2 1/2” green

Thread Requirements - Suggested colors

  • Embroidery floss or perle cotton, size 12 in colors matching wool colors

  • Embroidery floss or perle cotton, size 8 golden brown - Bird’s legs and beak

  • Embroidery floss or perle cotton, size 8 green - Flower stem

Block #4 Layout and Pattern

Instructions

  1. Trace the reversed image of the patterns onto fusible web.

  2. Cut out the pattern pieces leaving a small (1/8”) border around each.

  3. Fuse pattern pieces to designated wools, and then cut out along traced lines.

11. Use 3 strands of light blue floss, or 1 strand of perle, size 8 to stitch a single colonial knot eye on the bird.

12. Use 3 strands of the same floss used for the legs to stitch a single colonial knot eye, and a cross stitch nose on the bunny.
