Twisted chain stitch

January 05, 2022 by Grace Lombardo in embroidery stitch

This is one of my favorite stitches. It has so much more character than a regular chain stitch.

I used a variegated cotton perle, size 8 to stitch this example.

  1. Begin by drawing a guide line.

  2. Bring the needle up from behind the fabric at the base of the line and then pull the thread through (Make sure your thread is secured on the back).

3. Insert the needle back down just to the left of where you brought your thread up, and then up again about 3/8” from the starting point on the guide line.

4. Wrap the thread around the tip of the needle clockwise.

5. Pull the thread through. This will be your first link in the chain.

6. Insert the needle just to the left (outside the loop) of where you brought your thread up, and then back up again on the guide line.

7. Wrap the thread around the tip of the needle clockwise, and then pull the thread through.

8. Continue making links until you reach the end of your guide line. Tack the last loop down as you would a lazy daisy stitch.
