Inside-out Buttonhole Wheel Stitch

June 30, 2021 by Grace Lombardo

Although this is called the Inside-out button hole Wheel stitch I think it’s just a buttonhole stitch in a circular shape. It makes great small flowers as well a decorative flower centers. I’ve used it on numerous projects, so I thought I’d make a simple tutorial that you can link to when I refer to it in a pattern.

Let’s begin.

Start by drawing a circle with outward facing spokes or petals. A circle template works great for this.

Working in a clockwise direction, bring your needle up between two of the spokes. Pull the thread through.

Insert the needle back into the fabric at the end of the spoke to the right. Bring the needle back up at the base of the spoke. Slide the thread under the end of the needle and then pull the thread through.

Repeat the stitch around the circle.

When the last spoke has been stitched insert the needle into the same hole that you started with to create the wheel.

Add a French knot center and fern stitch stem for a small flowers. The spokes/petals can be made longer or shorter depending on your design.
